about

For the past five years, producer and vocalist Victoria Cheong has been steadily refining her vision as New Chance. Her core sound palette, and potent-yet-diaphanous singing are likely to evoke the golden age of dance music however, where others indulge in benign nostalgia, Cheong's deft, individual productions build upon the unmistakeable psychedelic malaise that lurked in that era's periphery. Numerous notable early 90s club hits teemed with spooky energy—stubbornly spiralling glossolalia, pulsing electronic atmospherics, and cryptic lyrics delivered in soulful deadpan. New Chance charts fresh routes through these haunted corners of dance music history toward a conception of the present moment that's as personal as it is propulsive.

Hardly Working offers her most focussed and finely tuned work yet, vividly translating her hypnotic live presence into the recorded realm. All but the title track are unmistakably songs in that they are vocally driven, yet instead of following a conventional narrative structure, they seem to uncoil slowly. Centring the voice amidst her colorful but introspective arrangements allows her to establish a tangible human vulnerability that's ripe for subversion. She masterfully channels this emotional momentum into strange psychological spaces by way of elusive second-person lyrics and surreal detours. The supporting architecture of her productions follows suit. While each cut swells patiently in dynamic and density, Cheong doesn't travel the traditional upward trajectory of club music. Instead of reaching an airborne climax, as her pieces expand in scope, they exert an inward, gradually engulfing pull.
